This is our first team to do two different projects in one week. Debby and Sarah came along this year not knowing where they would fit in on a construction team. By the way they both did an amazing job. I shared Deb why don't you do a mini medical clinic somewhere? She said "Sure". So we prayed and finally came up with doing one with our new friends at the police check point. We have built an amazing relationships with these men and women in blue. They are amazing and need to be admired for all the hard work they do day in and day out. So they got blessed this week with their very first medical clinic. Debby shared some of them had never seen a doctor. So we met Meida and Dr. Mario at the check point and started what was going to be an amazing two days of service. We started out the morning in prayer with those officers inside of the police station.
They opened up their facility to whatever needs they could provide for us. The Police Chief gave up his office so they could use it for the pharmacy and for Dr. Mario to see his patients. So Debby and Sarah got busy quickly setting up the pharmacy and helping Dr. Mario getting his station equipped with all he needed for helping the medical needs of the police. Meida was most helpful with all the fine details of this medical clinic. She knows her people and knows what they desire. Dr. Mario and Meida work very well together in the past and this time is not any different. Meida knows what he wants and she in turn shared it with Debby. Debby was there to serve Dr. Mario however she could. Sarah was there as well learning all she could from everyone.
First patient of the hour, Mike. Debby checked his blood pressure which was a little high. So we monitored Mike throughout the day. There was one lady named Nancy who came through who had been working early that day and it was around nine when she checked in to the clinic. Debby noticed she looked pale and was warm to the touch. She had been working for hours without any breakfast which is probably the case a lot of times. She and others got called out quickly and she had to go before having her breakfast. So Debby sent her to eat and told her to come back for a check up. Sarah learned quickly how to take temperatures and blood pressures as well. The triage was an amazing team. They would see Debby, Sarah and Meida, go to Dr. Mario for the examination. Once they saw Dr. Mario they would go back and give Debby the prescription if there was one. Debby would ask them to have a sit as she went into the Police Chief's office where the pharmacy was set up and fill the prescription. Debby took the prescription to Meida where she explained how they would use their medications. It was amazing watching these folks pull off a well greased medical clinic with what they had to work with.
Mike and I stayed a while with them to make sure they had everything they needed. So the Police Chief came over to Mike and ask him to put on an uniform shirt for a photo with him and a couple more police officers. Well this was all well and good but Mike was not quiet small enough for this shirt. He got it on but it took a lot of work. The Police Chief laughingly helped Mike try to button up the shirt. I am actually surprised Mike did not pop a button off of the shirt. There was so much laughter during this time and everyone waiting to been seen along with our medical team was in stitches at this performance. God is blessing us with this relationship with our new friends. We are blessed.
Well there was actually some more entertainment at the medical clinic. Everyone was getting their sugar checked by a prick in the finger. Well the Police Chief is kind of no he is a big baby. He was scared to let Debby prick his finger. But the problem was she could not get the finger to dry blood. Finally Debby got it and he jumped up out of his seat. His colleagues thought this was hilarious. Now remember our friends have not ever had medical care. So all this was new to them. But the best one of all was Sarah wanted to learn how to do this task as well. Mike volunteered to be Sarah's guienna pig. Mike sits down in front of Sarah ready to be pricked. Sarah puts on her gloves and starts to prick Mike's finger but instead pricked her own finger right through the gloves. Mike lost it. He started laughing and Debby turned around and said "What happened?" Mike laughed and said,"Sarah pricked herself." So Meida shared this with everyone sitting in the waiting area and once again we all joined in the laughter. But later that day there was a quant little lady who came through. This 78 year old lady helped keep the facilities clean daily. She had a presencse about her that was most gracious and gentle. Sarah told her this and this sweet little lady says "I know Jesus as my Lord and Savior." Sarah was humbled by this answer and shared with this lady how she could see Jesus in her as she glowed with joy. What a testimony to be able to see Jesus in someone by their mere presence. Can others see Jesus in you and me? Can others see Jesus in you and me? As in Pastor Paul's sermon on Sunday we are to be Christ like in all we do. This lady was definitely Christ like and she exhibited in her actions and in her smile.
The last day of the clinic was unusual to say the least. They saw like 15 people in the first hour. Debby and Sarah were excited they got see to all the women police that morning. There is six women on the force at this particular location. Mike and l left to go pick up some medicine they needed for a patient. When we returned they were all sitting there without only a couple of folks. There was an emergency raid where they all had to leave pronto to go take a lie dictator test. So everyone left except for a handful and this was the total Choluteca area had to go take this test. But God is good. Debby, Sarah, Dr. Mario and Meida saw a total of 45 patients in one in and half days. These 45 patients got intense care and one on one attention by Dr. Mario. He took his time and talked with each one individually with the way he does with all his patients. Debby and Sarah were very pleased with the way it all worked out. I can truly say Debby and Sarah were flexible which was necessary for this type of medical clinic. Because Debby did not know when she would see a patient or how many. It all depended on what was going on around the police station. Several times they got called out and had to go. Debby said she saw so many of them work during the day after being up most of the night with very little sleep. So hats off to these folks in blue who serve their country of Honduras daily without complaint. They are grateful for their jobs. They showed their gratitude for us by serving us a most delicious lunch out of their cafeteria, pork chops, rice and potato salad with tortillas. They took such great care of us as well as we took great care of them. Thank you God for this opportunity to serve you through a medical clinic and provide health care for our new friends.
